Why do you need to get your vehicle’s oil changed? The moving parts within a vehicle need to be lubricated properly in order to avoid damage, and oil in the engine provides this function. Over time, the oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dust, dirt, and debris, preventing the oil from doing its job. Here are the answers to many of your motor oil change questions:

When to Change the Oil

When it comes to changing your oil, always check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Many vehicles now have service reminders that alert you when it is time to change your oil. The systems can monitor the number of miles the vehicle has driven as well as how hard the car is being driven. If you receive an alert, get an oil change as soon as you can.

Checking Oil Levels

Check your oil level at least once a month and get repairs done as soon as you detect a leak. Some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors rather than traditional dipsticks, so check your owner’s manual and follow the recommendations. When inspecting manually with traditional dipsticks, make sure your car is turned off and is parked on level ground. Open the hood and pull the dipstick out from the engine, wiping any oil off from the end. Insert it back into the tube and push it all the way back in. Pull it back out and look at both sides of the dipstick to see where the oil lies. If the top of the oil streak is between the indicating marks or within the crosshatched area, the level is fine. If the oil streak is below the minimum mark, you will need to add oil.

How Often to Change Oil

Some follow the rule to change oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. However, many automakers have oil-change intervals at 7,500 to 10,000 miles or 6 to 12 months. Again, refer to your owner’s manual for detailed information. It’s not all about the miles, so change your oil as often as your owner’s manual states, even if you are not driving it as frequently. Oil becomes less effective as it ages.

Choosing Your Oil

Wondering whether you need synthetic oil or not? Check your owner’s manual. Many newer vehicle models will have the weight of your car’s motor oil printed on the cap where you add oil. If you are not sure of what oil you should be using because you do not have an owner’s manual, check with your local dealer.
